In 1997, PLC kicked off the largest educational program in its 89-year history. We produced a comprehensive 32-page, full color brochure on forestry and logging in the West. Along with the brochure we produced a 17-minute video that encapsulated the same story. We built an exhibit (shown above) to take to teacher conferences. We produced versions for the U.S. and B.C.
On October 1, 1997 our exhibit had its debut at the California Science Teachers Conference in Palm Springs. Out of the 300 to 400 exhibits at the show, PLC stood out as one of the best.
Attendance at the show was about 2,500 teachers. Over 2,200 teachers came to the PLC booth and picked up a copy of our video and brochure. We were easily the most visited booth in the entire show.

Following that show, we went to teacher conferences in Oregon, Washington and British Columbia. The response was the same.
Over the years we have heard how teachers are liberal and you can't get into the schools. We found teachers are hungry for materials. After telling one teacher from L.A. that yes we were from the forest industry, he responded, "Great! We get swamped with materials from the Sierra Club and Green Peace and nothing from industry to balance our presentations."
In British Columbia teachers picked up the materials the first day, read them that night and came back and asked for sets of 30 brochures to use in class. An L.A. school superintendent took home samples and wrote us asking for 50 sets to distribute to schools in his district. In 1998 and 1999 we attended the National Science Teachers Conference in Seattle where 5,000 to 6,000 teachers attended conferences in British Columbia, California, Idaho, Montana, Oregon and Washington.

The Pacific Logging Congress Grant Application
The Pacific Logging Congress mission is to fulfill the need to provide sound technical education about the forest industry. Founded in 1909 the Pacific Logging Congress has sought to educate politicians, educators, their students and the general public about the need for sound responsible forestry to supply global needs for wood fiber. The Pacific Logging Congress is "The Unified Voice of the Western Logging Industry".
Each calendar year, as the budget allows, the Pacific Logging Congress makes available funds for awarding grants to organizations involved in projects that promote a positive public image for the forest products industry. Requests are evaluated on the basis of the impact toward enhancing the public's knowledge of the good forest management practices being used by the industry.
Requests will be received all year round. The Executive Committee will review the applications and determine which grants will be funded for the year.
The following Assessment Priorities will be used in evaluating funding:

Program or Project is designed for use within the Pacific Logging Congress membership area

Communicates environmental benefits of forestry and the use of forest products

Communicates importance of balance between a need for forest products and protecting the environment

Has a clear component for measuring success

Is non-duplicative of other programs in the region

Reaches a wide audience

Most effective use of Pacific Logging Congress funds
